Research Advisory Board
Experts by lived experience

THE MSCOS RESEARCH ADVISORY BOARD (RAB)
From its inception, the MSCOS study has benefited from the guidance of peer- researchers and an MSCOS Research Advisory Board (RAB), comprised of experts with lived experience.  The high level of survivor leadership, survivor participation and input into the MSCOS has ensured that the methods, procedures, 7 core outcomes and  38 long-list outcomes were explicitly chosen by survivors, in an accessible and meaningful engagement process.

The MSCOS Research Advisory Board is at the centre of the MSCOS project, providing vital participation and guidance on all matters related to MSCOS development. This includes:
  • Providing original MSCOS-related materials and reviewing other key materials and outputs of the project
  • Reviewing ethics applications and study documentation (including the draft- e-Delphi survey)
  • Providing expert input into the outcomes framework and categories, and the core outcome set
  • Advising on the engagement with stakeholders who are survivors, with recommendations for appropriate interview techniques and practice
  • Facilitating multi-agency workshop discussion groups
  • Presenting MSCOS and related information to policymakers, including the UK Home Office

The MSCOS Research Advisory Board will continue to play a central role within the Community of Practice,  participating in the MSCOS newsletters, podcasts, online forum and expert workshops. Members of the RAB are producing material to support working with survivors and participating in research and communities of practice.  These can be accessed here.

Keith Lewis is a survivor leader, an anti-slavery advocate and independent consultant. He is an advisor for Survivor Alliance and a member of the MSCOS Research Advisory Board and Community of Practice (www.MSCOS.online), based at Kings College London. Keith Lewis is a committee member for the British Standards Institute (BSI) Royal Charter. As the first survivor leader to work with the BSI, he has had a key role in the production of the British Standard 25700: Organizational responses to Modern Slavery Guidance, and the International Standard ISO 37200. These are pioneering standards which provide organizations with guidance on how to manage human trafficking risks in their operations, supply chains and wider operating environments. Keith speaks at UK and international workshops and events, to promote understanding of the subject of modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking.

I am a survivor leader with 13± years lived experiences and now a Modern Slavery/Human Trafficking independent consultant/advocate. Over the years I have come to understand the gaps in research, law enforcement, policy, and service development when it comes to the survivors of modern slavery from foreign countries and the survivor’s community overall. I have been motivated by my own personal experiences as a survivor and a survivor leader to be actively involved in the modern slavery sector by bringing in my lived experience expertise and knowledge as I strongly believe only a collaborative work between the sector and the  lived experienced survivor leaders can get the community the changes it desperately needs.  I have acquired the Survivor lead certificate: survivor engagement, leadership, advocate and development as well as the Peer Mentoring Certificate from Survivor Alliance Academy.

My experience includes supporting survivors and empowering trafficking survivors’ to create agreements and boundaries as well as safeguarding, trauma-informed practice and anti-oppressive practice. I have worked as a consultant  for the Modern Slavery PEC, Afruca, and Survivor Alliance. I am currently working with Hope for Justice, British Red Cross and the Snowdrop Project on the IMSA framework Model as well as MSCOS.

I have spoken at a legal webinar about what survivors need from lawyers and I have also spoken with a range of politicians and the local mayor about the needs of survivors. I am a pro-active member of my local community and a student at college, where I have initiated changes in the enrolment of survivors.

I have also volunteered as an interpreter for counselling sessions for domestic workers. I am also a spokesperson of Future Voices.

I was a panelist at the Labour Conference 2021 NOW IS THE TIME FOR EQUALITY: ‘Time To Recognise Union Equality Reps Work and Time To Reinstate Migrant Domestic Workers Rights’ which was held in the Consort Room, Grand Hotel, Brighton.
I am co-researcher for the Reintegration Project of Kings' College London and Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women and I am also a delegate in Thailand for Strengthening the Rights of Women in South East Asia and Europe.

Peter Parker

I have worked as a consultant with Survivor Alliance and Nottingham University Rights Lab, and as a peer researcher for the Modern Slavery Core Outcomes Set study and STAR-WB. I have worked with Human Trafficking Foundation as an independent consultant on the update of the Slavery and Trafficking Survivor Care Standards.   I have spoken as a panelist alongside Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking CEOs and Senior managers on centering the voices of LGBTQIA+ survivors.

I work with young young LGBTQIA+ survivors on their wellbeing, mental health and safety. I am a Champion for Mental Health England, which provides guidance on how people, professionals, workplaces, education centres and the wider community should respond to anyone, including survivors, who are experiencing or having existing mental health issues. It also provides an action plan to maintain individual personal security and safety and enable access to a long term strategy and support

I worked with other survivors to campaign on International Anti-Slavery Day, which included a meeting with the UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. I am studying Beauty at college, where I am also a student representative. My intention is to study mental health, specifically focused in the modern slavery/human trafficking sector.   I also work with, and belong to the Singing Proud Nottingham Choir Committee and Inclusion group.
